Rallycross develops further; and this February, is ready to start with a winter series. The RallyX On Ice series will begin on 1 February. The four races will include Örebro, Høljes, Karlstad, and Åre.
“There will be good media coverage of the races and we will have at least twelve Supercar Lites ready on the start list,” says Jonas Lundin, CEO STCC. Rallycross is growing world wide, and in Sweden, RallyX was a success in 2014. In particular, the new Supercar Lites class attracted many drivers. There were young super talents like Kevin Hansen and Kevin Eriksson that took victories in the championship, but also known names such as many-time STCC winner Richard Göransson and rally star Patrik Flodin. Now we will meet several of them again, on the ice! They can expect tough competition! Olsbergs MSE, team champion in FIA World Rallycross Championship 2014, is included in the organization behind RallyX On Ice and ensures a large and powerful line-up in all competitions. “The idea of a winter series has been with me a long time and now that we have enough cars to secure a good starting field, it is really time to launch the project,” says Andreas Eriksson, owner of Olsbergs MSE.
Along with the established rallycross drivers, stars from other motor sports will also participate in the series. “We will be including known drivers who come from the regions where the races are to be held. We are in discussions and hope to reveal the names of several of them soon,” says Lundin.
Three of the races in RallyX On Ice will be determined in conjunction with other major sporting events. The premiere on 1 February runs at Örebro racetrack in the middle of the Swedish Winter championship week. So, there is a championship title to fight for.
“Competition is part of the club’s anniversary and that it becomes a winter event, fits well. The first race on the track was settled namely February 1, 1976,” says Morgan Östlund, president of Finnskoga MK, who also reveals that the club also plans to invite the audience to a competition in Supercar, on 7 February for the second event. Taking place in classical rallycross land, casing Motorstadion in northern Värmland. Where over 34,000 spectators flocked to see the sport’s WorldRX stars in the summer Celebrating their 40 year anniversary this year, Finnskoga MK has high hopes that RallyX On Ice will also attract a lot of audience.
The third event will be in conjunction with the World Rally Championship on Farjestad racetrack in Karlstad, Sweden on 13 February and the finale is scheduled for Åresjön 13 or 14 March, the weekend when the Alpine World Cup for ladies visits the ski resort in northern Sweden.
A basic factor for RallyX On Ice to be considered is, of course, the weather. “When it comes to Orebro, we will look at long-term weather forecasts starting early next week. Then we will decide if we conduct the event or not,” says Lundin.
