FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy 2016 season kicked off in style this weekend in Montalegre, Portugal. It was the 3rd year in a row, the venue has hosted the curtain raiser event for the WorldRX challenge. Double crowned Petter Solberg won the first round and proved how he is eager to defend his title on following rounds. Robin Larsson and Thomas Heikkinen completed the podium after a spectacular battle in final race.
RX Lites Champions Kevin Eriksson and Kevin Hansen started their 2016 campaigns in Montalegre too. Kevin Eriksson will be driving an Olsbergs MSE built Fiesta ST and Kevin Hansen will be diriving 208 RX for full season this year.
It was an amazing weekend for all the parties who were involved in the event . Saturday started with pouring rain and wind which made the surface incredibly rough for drivers. It wasn’t even possible to walk on the gravel sections of the circuit. Under these circumstances, Kevin Eriksson set the fastest lap time during the first free practice session of the race and the season. This motivated young Swede for the first Qualifying race. Heavy surface conditions, pouring rain caused many troubles to drivers including extraordinary hits and traffic. Eriksson finished Q1 at 9th position where Kevin Hansen finished 14th place.
At the end of Qualifying rounds Kevin Eriksson managed to join the Semi-Final groups. Kevin Hansen was not that lucky and missed this chance by only one position as he finished 13th. 2014 RX Lites IstanbulRX podium finisher Janis Baumanis also finished at 14th place overall at the steer of his Team Austria run Fiesta.
Kevin Eriksson had a pretty good start at the Semi-Final 2 but right after first corner, he lost his position. He lost his chance to jump in to final race as he finished 4th. With all these reults and points collected, he found himself at the 8th position of World RX 2016 General Standings.
